Avocado farm
Here at Summerland Farm, we have more than 2000 avocado trees! Each year, depending on the weather, we harvest in excess of 150 tonnes of avocados.
We grow a number of delicious avocado varieties, including the most popular in Australia – the Hass. Make sure you drop by The Grocer when they’re in season to pick one up for yourself, or hop on our tractor tour to experience the orchards!
Did you know?
There’s a reason avocados are an Aztec symbol of love and fertility – the trees grow in pairs and need another close by to grow and pollinate.

The harvest
We have 30 employees with a disability on the farm, pruning, maintaining and harvesting the avocados throughout the year.
Interestingly, avocados don’t ripen on the tree and only begin to soften once they’re picked – but some of our trees reach 20 metres in height and are so tall that the team uses cherry pickers to harvest the topmost fruit.

Good for your health!
Not only are avocados delicious, they’re healthy too! They are nutrient-dense, full of vitamins, as well as potassium, folic acid and fibre.
Avocados are also one of the few fruits that have healthy fats which contribute to good heart health. So no need to feel guilty about trying our restaurant’s delicious signature Macado salad!

A brief history
The humble ‘avo’ originally hails from Mexico and is now a favourite for many Australians!
Evidence of avocado consumption has been found going back almost 10,000 years when humans were gathering and eating the wild fruit, but it’s believed that the delicious avocado we enjoy today has been cultivated for about 5,000 years.
Did you know?
The avocado is also called an Alligator Pear because of its pear-like shape and green skin.
